DETECTING AND PREVENTING NETWORK ATTACKS: INTRODUCTION (PART I)

The landscape of doing business today is significantly different from the landscape of just ten years ago. Companies are more connected than ever, with the promise that network expansion will only continue. People prefer to do business online, rather than going through the stress of being there in person. As a result, companies must live up to the responsibility of not just keeping their network safe, but also keeping their customers data’s and information’s safe without sacrificing growth or productivity.

The landscape of internet users has also significantly increased today, with a report by Wikipedia stating that the users of internet in the world which stood at 16% in 2005 from a population of 6.5 billion, had a significant change to 40% in 2014 from a population of 7.2 billion. The reason for this cannot be farfetched, as almost all businesses are now reliant on the internet as mentioned above. This is evident enough from the advent of social network site such as facebook, twitter, instagram, etc. We also make virtually all banking transactions and e-commerce via the internet. Also, the conduct of online examinations and online application cannot be ruled out.

With the development of network technologies and applications, network attacks are greatly increasing, and new types of attacks are discovered in quick succession.

 

A network that cannot be compromised can hardly be attained, but the rate at which networks are being compromised today can be reduced to a very minimal level that will not pose a threat to either the business owners or the end users.
