What is Mini Importation
Mini importation is simply the means of buying products from overseas at a very cheap rate and selling it for a higher rate.
How importation business work
From my family to friends and everyone I have mentored into this business, one of the very first questions they ask is, how does this business works, who are those you sell to, why are you introducing it to me when you can make much more?
I need not remind you that according to National Population Commission, Nigeria has a population of about 198 million. My point is this, the market can never be saturated considering the massive population we have in this country. All you need is how to make use of that strength.
What you basically do is to buy products at a lower price and sell the products at a higher price.
What determines my profit
The profit you make is dependent on 2 major factors, you can source for and buy your products at a lower price, or sell your products at a high price. That’s just the logic.
This is the simple means everybody in the business of importation makes their money.
What do I need to start mini importation
I can assure you that you have everything that it takes to start the mini importation business as far as you are reading this article. Those things you need are:
- A personal computer or mobile phone
- An internet connection (such as modem or MiFi) or phone data
- Home address or office space where you can keep products (optional)
- An initial startup capital of anything from 5,000 naira
- A valid email address
Once you have those items listed above you are good to go. Mini importers can be guaranteed of making at least 6 figures every month.
You really don’t need an office to run a mini importation business, sometimes you don’t even need to see the goods. By the time you are through with this article, all you need to make will be at your fingertips.
How to source for products
Many of the products that will be introduced to you are sourced from China. I won’t bore you with products from Europe or the USA, this is because more than 80% of products sold online in Nigeria are sourced from China.
How to pay for Products
Paying for products sourced from China is now something that can be done at a beck and call. Unlike before when there are a lot of constraints in getting Forex or exchanging currency needed to pay for goods.
There are several means that can be used, such as PayPal, Payoneer, and even direct payment into a Nigerian bank account. This is possible as we now have trusted agents that can help make payment to suppliers or help procure goods in china at a little or no cost.
How am I sure my goods will be delivered after payment?
My greatest fear when I made my first transaction on Alibaba is getting duped. I get the feeling everyone might have if asked to pay for a good that he has neither seen nor felt because I have been there.
This fear is normal, but many of these sites have created measures to guaranty that you are not duped. Many uses what is called Trade Assurance to secure your payment in what is called an Escrow and your supplier will only be paid when you have confirmed receiving those goods.
Also, you can open a dispute resolution as regards goods that are not up to standard or different from what you ordered, and your money might be refunded if you have a good claim.
How to ship goods down to Nigeria
Product delivery can be done in two major ways which are: free delivery and paid delivery.
Personally, I do not advise any business-minded individual to go for free delivery (between 14 to 70 days) as that I believe is not for serious-minded people. So I won’t dwell much on that.
Paid delivery (between 3 to 9 days) is obviously much more safer and faster. Examples of these include DHL, EMS, FedEx, and some personal shipping agents. While paid shipping is not free, it is actually for the business-minded people.
How to sell my products
The most important part of this business is selling those products that you have procured. Buying those products is not just enough, so you have to get those people that are going to buy those goods from you.
You can do this using several ways such as:
- Online store (such as Oduadeals, Jumia, Konga, e.t.c)
- Internet marketing (such as Facebook ads, google ads, Instagram ads, e.t.c)
- Referrals
- Physical stores
- Handbills or flyers
- Newspaper ads e.t.c.
You can always choose whichever one you feel best suited for you, but based on my experience I will always go for Online Store and Facebook Ads.
With an online store, you can either sell on existing platforms or create your own personal online store. But with Facebook Ads, all you need do is advertise on Facebook.

Delivery used to be one of the debacles of mini-importation, but thanks to a lot of delivery companies and agents that we have now, delivery is seamless.

- African Courier Express

Whose says mini-importation is hard, or you require a lot of money. All you need is a wealth of knowledge and a little capital as low as 10,000 naira.
